How Much Does a Kitchen Remodel Cost in Tampa Bay?
The first thing most folks ask me is what a kitchen runs. It's a fair question, and it's also the one I can't answer honestly in a single number. Anybody who gives you a firm price before they've seen your kitchen is guessing, and a guess on a kitchen is how jobs end up double what you were told.
So let me do something more useful than throw a figure at you. Let me walk you through what actually moves the price, so when you do get a real quote, you can read it.
There's no such thing as an average kitchen
A "kitchen remodel" covers a huge spread. On one end you've got a refresh: new counters, new paint, maybe new hardware and a backsplash, cabinets that stay where they are. On the other end you're gutting the room to the studs, moving walls, rewiring, new plumbing, custom cabinets, the works. Those two jobs aren't even in the same conversation, price-wise.
Most kitchens land somewhere in the middle. New cabinets and counters, new appliances, a fresh layout that actually works, updated lighting and electrical. That's the project I do most.
Here's the honest version of the ranges, and I want to be clear these are general bands, not a quote on your house:
- A cosmetic refresh (keep the layout, swap the surfaces): [VERIFY: rough $ range, refresh]

I'd rather leave those honest and fill them in once I've stood in your kitchen than print a number I can't stand behind. The point of the bands isn't the dollar figure anyway. It's that the range is wide for a reason, and the reason is the decisions you make below.
What actually drives the number
Cabinets. This is usually the biggest line on the whole job. Stock cabinets cost a fraction of custom, and the gap is real. The trap is the middle: a lot of "semi-custom" lines look like a deal and aren't, once you add the pieces you actually need. Cabinets are where I'll slow you down and make sure you're spending on the right thing.
Counters. Quartz, granite, butcher block, laminate, solid surface. The material swing here is big, and the install matters as much as the slab. A cheap counter set wrong costs you twice.
Are you moving anything. This is the quiet one. Keep the sink, stove, and walls where they are and you save real money. Move the plumbing, relocate the range, take out a wall, and now you're into permits, framing, electrical, and sometimes a structural call. Sometimes moving that wall is absolutely worth it. Sometimes it's the line item that blows the budget for no real gain, and I'll tell you which one yours is.
Appliances. Your call and your budget, but they swing a kitchen by thousands all on their own. A pro range and a panel-ready fridge are a different planet from solid mid-grade units that'll serve you fine for fifteen years.
What's behind the walls. This is the Florida part, and the part nobody likes. Older homes around here hide things: old wiring that isn't up to code, plumbing that's tired, the occasional bit of water damage or soft subfloor we don't find until demo. A good contractor builds some room for that into the conversation up front instead of surprising you with it on a Tuesday. Finishes and the little stuff. Tile, lighting, the faucet, the hardware, trim. Each one feels small. Added up, they're a chunk, and they're where a budget quietly creeps.
Why two quotes can be thousands apart
You'll get bids that don't match, and it's confusing. Usually it's not that one guy's gouging you. It's that the two quotes aren't for the same job. One includes the permit, the demo, the cleanup, and real allowances for the materials you actually want. The other left half of that out so the bottom number looks better, and you'll pay the difference later in change orders. What I'd tell you if you were standing in my kitchen
Set a real budget before you fall in love with a finish. Then build in a cushion, ten to fifteen percent, for the stuff behind the walls. Spend it on the things you touch every day, the cabinets and the counters and the layout, before the things that just look good in a photo. And get a written proposal with the scope spelled out, so the number you agree to is the number that holds.
A good kitchen takes weeks, not a weekend, and it costs what it costs to do right. But you should never be surprised by the bill. That part's on the contractor, and it's the part I take seriously.
